Incoming payments

Payment types

Incoming payments are any flow of funds that credit a Volt Account or Named Account. Volt automatically classifies each transaction by its origin and type. Knowing the payment Type is essential for instant reconciliation and executing your internal business logic.

The types of incoming payments supported by the Volt platform are:

  • Gateway : Funds received directly from a payer who authorized the transfer using Volt Gateway product (Open Banking). These payments are typically associated with immediate purchases or services. When using Volt PIS together with Volt Accounts, each incoming payment will generate two notifications: one from your Gateway configuration webhook and another related to the incoming credit on your account. It is up to you which notification to use for your processing or reconciliation logic. Make sure to handle only one to avoid duplicate payment records.
  • Manual credit: A standard bank transfer (e.g. SEPA, SWIFT) initiated by the payer from their external bank.
  • Top-up: Funds sent by the account holder (the merchant or PSP) from their own external bank account to increase the operational balance of their Volt Account.
  • Internal: Funds moved between two different accounts within the Volt platform. This is not an external bank payment. For more details, see Internals.
  • Bounce Back: Funds that were previously sent out as an Outgoing payment but were rejected and returned by the beneficiary's bank due to an error (e.g., invalid account number).

Every incoming payment received on Volt Accounts is automatically created with the status Completed, which is currently the only status an incoming payment can have.

The Linking Mechanism allows our system to connect multiple corresponding payments, providing a clear audit trail for funds. For example, a Gateway Payment is automatically linked back to the original Incoming Accounts Payment, and a Reversal is linked to the transaction it corrects. This mechanism is essential for accurate reporting and reconciliation, as it allows your system to easily track the lifecycle of funds. For more details, see Linking
